In Undefined Landscapes, Rinoshan Susiman transforms the fleeting impressions left by the body on blankets and bed sheets into textured, low-relief landscapes. Beginning with photographic documentation of these temporary traces, he employs a mixed-media process using sand, relief collage, and textile impressions to preserve moments that would otherwise disappear.
The series is presented in a restrained monochrome palette derived from the maroon, saffron, and green of the Sri Lankan national flag. By merging these colors with the intimate traces of the sleeping body, Susiman examines how ideas of nationhood, identity, and power extend into the most private spaces of everyday life.
Contour lines, grid systems, and embedded lace reference the visual language of maps and territorial boundaries. Through these elements, the bed is reimagined as more than a place of rest; it becomes a symbolic site where personal experience intersects with broader political and social structures. Undefined Landscapes invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between the vulnerable body, domestic space, and the invisible forces that shape both.
Rinoshan Susiman (b.1993 , Batticaloa Sri Lanka. Lives and works in Jaffna) is a Sri Lankan interdisciplinary artist working across moving image, sound, instalation, interactive new media and mixed media. His practice explores memory, the body, landscape and the socio political conditions that shape lived experience. Combining both traditional and digital processes, he transforms temporary bodily traces into abstract visual forms, exploring the relationship between personal memory and colective histories. His recent works reinterpret impressions left on textiles as imagined landscapes, reflecting on trauma, displacement and the layered geographies of post-conflict Sri Lanka.
Susiman completed his Master of Art and Design Studies at the School of Visual Art and Design, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Art & Design) from the Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
