Titled Nocturne, the series draws on the night as a poetic and psychological space where the boundaries between the conscious and subconscious dissolve. Memory, desire, and emotion surface within these liminal states, positioning the night as a site of introspection and quiet intensity.
Working with acrylic and charcoal, Kumara constructs layered, atmospheric surfaces through muted tonalities and diffused shadows. Recurring natural forms, particularly trees, act as vessels of interiority, while mist-like textures evoke the shifting luminosity of night, navigating tensions between visibility and obscurity.
Shaminda Kumara brings over a decade of experience in interior design, where an acute sensitivity to space, material, and atmosphere informs his artistic practice. Alongside this, he has developed a sustained engagement with painting. A graduate of the University of Visual & Performing Arts, this exhibition marks his inaugural solo presentation within a gallery context.
