Through this work, the artist vividly explores
the cultural contradictions and complexities present within contemporary Sri
Lankan society, highlighting the tension between tradition and modernity. The
traditional iconographic compositions and visual characteristics of southern
Sri Lankan temple mural art are blended with symbols that reflect the
contradictions and complexities of contemporary society.
While preserving the gravity, structure, and
formal qualities of a traditional visual language, the work questions the
political, cultural, and lifestyle contradictions faced by society today. It
seeks to re-examine, within an artistic space, the evolving Sri Lankan identity
that oscillates between nostalgic memories of the past and a rapidly
transforming modern world.
At its core, the work invites a renewed reading
of Sri Lankan identity through the tension between inherited traditions and the
realities of contemporary life.
